Ruins at Stoney Bluff Pottery.
Stoney Bluff was one of the potteries worked by David Drake – Dave the Slave Potter – in the mid-1800s. A few decades ago, a pond site was bulldozed near the old kiln site and the “wasters” were piled in a dozen mounds on high ground. The University if Illinois’ George Calfas and a small team excavated the kiln in the Spring of 2012. I was there for it all. It’s another piece of the forthcoming documentary and another piece of the stoneware manufacturing puzzle along Horse Creek.
